Best Medium Sized Vans To Buy In 2023

Medium sized vans are incredibly versatile vehicles as they can be used for almost everything. This van type combines the nimbleness of a small van with the practicality of a large van, making it a great option for families and business owners.

With there being so many vans of this size on the market, finding the right van can be difficult. Whether that’s using the vehicle as your company van or family car, a medium van makes sense for businesses or families looking to upgrade their car or van. Medium vans are also an excellent choice if you are planning a camper van conversion.

When it comes to the best medium sized vans to buy, we’ve picked vans from our collection that you should consider buying in 2023.

Ford Transit Custom

It’s no surprise that the Ford Transit Custom is one of the most popular mid-sized vans since it was launched in 2012.

In 2022, Ford had sold 2,729 Transit Customs, thus making it the UK’s most popular van. While the Transit Custom is smaller than its bigger brother, the Transit, it stands out from other medium vans due to its all-round capabilities.

Not only does the Transit Custom offer plenty of power from its 2 litre EcoBlue diesel engine, but it also has fantastic handling for a van of its size. From motorways to tight city streets and busy built-up areas, the Transit Custom can handle any road environment fantastically well.

Ford has recently released an all-new model of the Transit Custom, which will be available in 2023. The Transit Custom comes in three options, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric, as well as the interior, which doubles up as a mobile office. If you have any questions about when the new Transit Custom will be available at Nationwide Cars, please contact one of our team members.

Volkswagen Transporter

For more than 70 years, the Volkswagen Transporter has been the mid-sized van of choice amongst businesses and families. In 2023, the Transporter is still one of the best medium vans in its class.

The 2 litre TDI diesel engine comes with a variety of engine power options, starting from 90bhp, all the way up to 204bhp. There is also the option to go for front wheel drive or the 4Motion all-wheel drive (AWD). Whichever drivetrain option you choose, you’ll be guaranteed a wonderful driving experience with the Transporter.

If you are looking for a medium van to convert into a camper van, the Transporter is the van of choice for camper van converters. We recommend picking the Kombi, Caravelle or California option when it comes to converting your Transporter into a camper van.

Vauxhall Vivaro

Vauxhall’s Vivaro is not only one of the most affordable medium sized vans we have, but it's also one of the most comfortable to drive in.

Its state-of-the-art suspension system provides a smooth ride for business owners and families. This means that you can enjoy those long distance trips without needing to stop at the next motorway service station for a rest.

You can choose to have the Vivaro in either a 1.5 or 2 litre diesel engine or you can decide to have its electric version, the e-Vivaro. While the e-Vivaro is more expensive than its diesel counterpart, it’s a great choice when it comes to not paying in Clean Air Zones across certain cities in the UK!

Toyota Proace

The Toyota Proace shares a lot in common with the Vauxhall Vivaro, Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch.

As the van was built by Stellantis, which owns Vauxhall, Peugeot and Citroen, Toyota’s mid-sized offering holds its own with Ford’s Transit Custom. The suspension of the Proace is more than capable of handling the bumps and potholes of the UK’s road network.

While the Proace does not have as many engine options compared to the VW Transporter, it has a massive 1,400kg payload. It means that you can store plenty of cargo or parcels without having to worry about not having enough space to put them in the van.

Citroen Dispatch

Citroen’s Dispatch stands out amongst its competitors in the mid-sized van market, due to its handling and fuel economy.

The 1.5 and 2 litre BlueHDi engines are on par with Volkswagen’s TDI and Ford EcoBlue offerings. The Dispatch can do 38.7 miles per gallon on a single tank of diesel, which means that you won’t have to worry about filling up at the next petrol station.

Citroen also has an electric equivalent to the normal Dispatch, called the e-Dispatch, which is a greener alternative to the diesel-powered Dispatches we have. If you run a business that requires delivering parcels around the city centre, then we recommend getting the e-Dispatch for your business.
