Nissan Qashqai Review

Size

At 4,377mm long and 2,070mm wide, the Qashqai is a very similar size to the Ford Focus hatchback in both width and length. It is, however, considerably taller, meaning that it gives you a much better road visibility due to an elevated driving position.

In terms of front space, there's plenty of head and legroom. In the rear, an optional panoramic glass roof gives an increased sense of space, even though it does eat into head room. Despite this, the Qashqai is spacious for passengers in comparison to other family-friendly SUVs, while also offering a fair amount of internal storage.

The Qashqai's boot capacity is 430 litres, meaning that it holds more luggage than the VW Golf. Alongside this, it benefits from a huge boot opening and all derivatives - aside from the entry-level Visia editions - also come with a false boot floor, which can be raised to create separate storage or the ability to add a section in to create a divider.

Engine & Economy

In terms of engine choices, the Qashqai can be had with an entry-level 1.2-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel or 1.6-litre diesel. The diesel engines, in particular, are a refined choice - fuel efficient over longer distances with enough power on the motorway.

The pair of small yet smooth diesel engines offer plenty of power and run efficiently, particularly when combined with the Qashqai's height - which gives extra agility on uneven road surfaces. It also offers low noise levels, staying quiet even at high revs. Even the 1.2-litre petrol engine is suprisingly good, particularly if you don't need to transport large amounts of luggage or if you aren't covering too many miles.

In terms of economy, the Qashqai is very cheap to run and highly fuel efficient - particularly over longer distances. With the 1.5-litre diesel engine, fuel economy sits at 74.3mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km.

Driving Technology

The Qashqai possesses plenty of grip, assisted with some intriguing technological features. Grip is helped, for example, with the Body Motion Control technology, which helps to smooth out body movement over bumps. Stability is improved with Active Ride Control, a system that automatically reduces suspension issues by utilising the brakes in an innovative way.

The car's steering benefits from new Active Return Control technology - helping it feel more natural - and Nissan's Active Engine Brake function reduces jerkiness when you lift off the throttle.

The Qashqai is also packed full of features designed to help you monitor your car and surroundings, including an Adaptive Front Lighting System and the Intelligent Around View Monitor. For parking, it's worth noting that park assist and a 360-degree camera system is only available with the high-end Tekna editions.

Safety Features

The Qashqai achieved a full five-star Euro NCAP rating, scoring well in both the adult and child occupant categories and with more protection for pedestrians than some of its rivals.

Safety is bolstered with a variety of in-car technology, including six airbags, electronic stability control and a range of features that have safety benefits when cornering. With some models, cameras help you to park and detect moving objects.

Interior & Colours

Benefitting from a recent facelift, the Qashqai has a contemporary appearance, highly focussed on ergonomic design and ensuring the car is easy to drive. It has good interior build quality, with solid buttons and switches.

There are a variety of trim levels available, each coming with a decent level of in-car tech. The entry-level Visia editions come equipped with a good level of equipment as standard, although you would want to go for the Acenta trim for luxury extras - six speakers, power folding mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, and dual-zone climate control among many other features.

Upgrade to an N-Connecta trim to benefit from a large array of technological features - like a NissanConnect infotainment system and Smart Vision pack - or the Tekna+ trim to get leather upholstery, electronic front seats and a panoramic roof.

The Nissan Qashqai comes in a range of colours and shades - from solid Flame Red and stylish Ink Blue through to an unconventional metallic Chestnut Brown, striking Vivid Blue and vibrant Storm White.
