Volkswagen Crafter Review

Size

The Crafter comes in 3 different vehicle lengths - 5,986mm, 6,836mm and 7,391mm - to provide a load space to meet your specific needs. Additionally, there is also a choice of roof height to maximise the storage space to up to 18.4 cubic metres. Depending on the model you choose the overall weight of the Crafter can vary from 3 tonnes for the lightest front-wheel drive models. up to 5.5 tonnes for the heaviest rear-wheel drive model.

The rear-wheel drive options offer a greater maximum load weight capacity of around 3.5 tonnes while the front-wheel drive models can carry more thanks to their extra loading height. A noteworthy feature of the VW Crafter is that the rear doors open to 270 degrees and have a magnetic door stop included to prevent them from hitting the side of the van.

Engine & Economy

The Volkswagen Crafter’s engines are 2.0 TDI units from VW’s EA 288 family of commercial vehicle units. These engines are designed for durability, low-down pulling power and improved efficiency. They are also fitted with stop-start technology to improve efficiency even further, particularly in urban environments.

Front-wheel drive manual models with 138bhp can achieve around 38mpg while the upgraded turbodiesel can produce 174bhp and averages 37mpg. The model you decide upon will depend on your needs; carrying heavier loads will likely require more horsepower but that may require sacrificing on load space.

Safety Features

As standard, Crafter drivers will have driver, passenger and side airbags, ABS, stability control and, for those blowy days, wind assist to prevent the van from tipping over at speeds. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System is also in place in this Volkswagen to automatically trigger the brakes after a collision to prevent further damage.

There are several other safety features available with the Crafter. Adaptive Cruise Control monitors the speed of vehicles ahead of you on the motorway and adapts your speed to keep you a safe distance from them and even slowing the Crafter to a safe stop if needed. City Emergency Braking alerts drivers to potential threats on the road ahead and can trigger the emergency brakes when it predicts a collision is imminent. Finally, Lane Assist can steer the van for short periods to ensure you stay in the right lane to prevent collisions and - combined with Front and Rear Assist - these safety features go above and beyond to make you aware of potential threats.

Interior

Comfort in the Crafter is among the best in its class with the ergoComfort suspension seat that can be adjusted in 20 different ways to ensure the driver is in the perfect position. A heated seat and massage feature can also be added for maximum comfort on any journey.

The build itself is top class, with a blend of durability and quality achieved throughout. The optional Car-Net display can provide drivers with satellite navigation as well as a range of connectivity features compatible with most modern smartphones to access mobile apps without having to risk using your phone on the go. There is also significant storage in the Crafter with space for everything such as laptops, phones, drinks, sunglasses, a torch and much more, so you’ll have everything you need when you hit the road in this van.
