VW Transporter Review
The Transporter is available in two wheelbases, with two different seating combinations and three roof heights, as well as various configurations (panel van, Kombi, Shuttle, Caravelle and California). It can deliver load volumes from 5.8 to 9.3m3, and payloads up to 1,217kg.
Low roof height models have a height of 1,990mm, compared to the standard medium height of 2,176mm. Long wheel base derivatives have a length of 5,292mm, compared to the 4,892mm of the shorter versions. In terms of size and space, it’s a true rival to the Ford Transit Custom.
Engine & Economy
Available with a choice of Euro 6 2.0-litre engines, the Volkswagen Transporter delivers 84hp, 102hp or 150hp with a single turbo, with a further option for a bi-turbo engine that delivers an impressive 204hp. Due to this, the Transporter offers a refined driving experience, able to tackle both cross-country and urban driving.
In terms of fuel efficiency and emissions, this is dependent on model, although VW engines are more efficient than ever. For example, the dedicated BlueMotion model (built on a SWB 102hp van) delivers up to 47.9 mpg and 153g/km of CO2. The best variant is the T28 SWB 2.0TDi 102PS BlueMotion Manual which, according to VW, delivers a combined MPG of 51.4 and CO2 of 145g/km.
In terms of power and speed, the Transporter is impressive. The popular 102hp engine can do 0-62mph in 15.3 secs and achieve a top speed of 98mph, while the heftier 150hp engine can do 0.62mph in 11.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 112mph.
The front-wheel drive set up means that this Volkswagen offers safe handling and light steering, with grip improved even further if you adopt for 4Motion AWD. You'll also get a huge variety of driving technology features, similar to those that you would encounter with a new VW car, such as adaptive cruise control, automatic city braking and post-collision braking.
Unsurprisingly, the VW Transporter is top of class in terms of safety. It achieved a four-star Euro N-Cap rating in 2013, with best results for adult occupant safety.
The van possesses the Automatic Post-Collision Braking system - which is designed to prevent secondary collisions after any accidents - as well as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist, Hill Hold Assist and a Driver Alert system all as standard. Optional safety extras include front fog lights and High Beam Assist.
The Transporter is designed with comfort and accessibility in mind. With a granite-like built quality, the VW Transporter comes with a 5'' touch screen display with USB and SD card compatibility. As standard, the van also comes with electric windows, while the driver's seat has height, reach and rake adjustment.
Interior flexibility is added depending on the selected trim level. With the Trendline, you get armrests, additional noise suppression, side storage compartments and a different cloth for the seats. With the Highline, you'll get a whole array of additional features, including auto lights and wipers, climatic air conditioning, a heated windscreen and leather covering for your steering wheel.
