Top 5 Towing Vans

If you’ve owned a van for a considerable amount of time, it’s likely that you’ve had to tow something on the back of the vehicle. Regularly towing a trailer or heavy equipment can put a lot of strain on the van, leaving you with a hefty repair bill. It’s important when choosing a van that it has lots of towing capacity and a tow bar to tow all your equipment or trailer.

Before you decide to buy a towing van, it’s worth making yourself aware of the current towing laws in the UK. If you’ve passed your car driving test from the 1 January 1997, you’re allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM). When it comes to towing large trailers, you will need a higher category licence to drive the van.

While there are so many vans that are capable of towing trailers and heavy duty equipment, it can be hard to pick one. We’ve listed our top 5 vans for towing, which will help you decide on a van that’s right for you or your business.

IVECO Daily

When it comes to the best large vans for towing, the IVECO Daily is perfect for towing heavy duty equipment and trailers. The Daily’s maximum tow weight of 3,500kg puts it in a class of its own when it comes to towing unbraked and braked trailers.

What’s even more impressive about the van is the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). Compared to other towing vans in the market, the Daily’s GVW can go up to 7,000kg with a full van and trailer. It means that rather than having to go through the stress of acquiring a specialist licence, you can tow heavy loads with the Daily and still be able to drive it legally.

Ford Transit Custom

In terms of medium vans for towing, the Ford Transit Custom has plenty of towing capacity to tow whatever you throw at it. The Transit has been the van of choice among van drivers for more than half a century in the UK. Since its launch in 2012, the Transit Custom has stood out from its competitors for its exceptional towing capabilities.

With a maximum towing weight of 2,500kg, it’s slightly less than what the IVECO Daily offers when it comes to towing heavy loads. However, the Transit Custom beats the Volkswagen Transporter within the medium van space as the German equivalent can tow slightly less weight at 2,200kg.

Volkswagen Crafter

The Volkswagen Crafter provides plenty of competition for large towing vans in the market. With a total gross vehicle weight of up to 6,000kg with a full van and trailer, the Crafter is slightly behind the Daily in terms of towing heavy loads for a large van. This van does pack a punch when it comes to towing trailers and equipment.

If you decide to go for the rear wheel drive version over front wheel drive, the Crafter is able to go up to 3,500kg for its towing capacity. It puts Volkswagen’s large van equivalent right up there with the Daily, although the Italian equivalent has the 3,500kg towing capacity across all its vans.

Renault Master

While the Renault Master is a fantastic large panel van that’s used for private and commercial use, it’s also capable of towing large vehicles and caravans. The Master’s maximum tow capacity is at 5,300kg for the gross vehicle weight, which is less than the VW Crafter and IVECO Daily.

If you’re towing a large trailer on the back of your Master, its dCI engines provide plenty of power when it comes to towing heavy loads. What Renault’s large van lacks with tow capacity, it makes up for it with its driveability along the UK’s roads and motorways.

MAN Tge

MAN’s Tge not only provides plenty of space to load whatever you throw at it, but it’s also a fantastic large towing van. Whether you decide to use the van for personal use or for your business, the Tge’s towing capacity makes it stand out from the Renault Master and VW Crafter.

If you decide to fully load the Tge while towing a heavy trailer or vehicle, it’s capable of towing a total GVW of 5,500kg. It’s slightly less than the IVECO Daily, although with the rear-wheel drive equivalent of the Tge, it offers 500kg more in terms of towing capacity. It means that you can tow a slightly heavier trailer without having to pay more for other large towing vans.
