When Is the Best Time to Buy a New Car?

Buying a new car is an important decision and, for most of us, a considerable investment. What many people don’t know is that choosing the right time to invest in a new vehicle could save them thousands of pounds.

We take a look at the best time of year to purchase a new car and how you can get the best dealership discounts.

Before Number Plate Changes

Arguably the best time of year to buy a new car is when new number plates are introduced. Registration plates are launched every year in March and September, which is why any model with the latest plate will cost more than those sporting earlier versions.

Two thirds of all car sales occur during this period, but the discounts will start two months before the official changes. Start your car hunt early and you’ll also be more likely to get finance and free car insurance.

At the End of Each Quarter

At the end of each quarter, car dealers will be keen on meeting their sales quota and more likely to run short-term car sales. This usually happens around the end of June, September and December, so it’s best to keep an eye on the market during this period. Dealers will also attempt to hit their weekly targets, so you can still get a good deal if you shop during weekdays, when showrooms are quieter.

Whenever a Newer Model Is Being Launched

New models or facelift versions always cause a stir before they go on the market. Car dealers will be looking to shift their soon-to-be old stock quickly and are more likely to reduce the prices during their final weeks in the showroom. Check when the newer car models are being released and plan your purchase around that time.

However, remember that older models depreciate faster than new ones and new cars lose nearly half their value within the first 3 years. So, if you're planning to keep your new vehicle for a while, you may want to consider buying a brand that will hold its value for longer. This will ensure you’ll still get a reasonable price when you decide to sell your car. Some of the brands known to hold their value are Mini, Volkswagen, Audi and Ford.

If you really want the newest model, we recommend waiting at least a few months before buying. By then, there will be less excitement around the launch and dealers will be more likely to offer discounts.

Seasonal Vehicles

Although fuel efficiency, specifications and demand can affect car prices, seasonality is a major factor often overlooked by shoppers. Certain types of cars may become more expensive or cheaper depending on the season.

If you’re looking for a good deal, you should always shop for vehicles when they’re least attractive. Dealerships offer chunky discounts on convertibles in the winter months, while 4x4s and SUV models like the Nissan Qashqai become more expensive during this period.

However, if your current car is underperforming, it’s best to buy a new one before the winter for your own peace of mind. Poor weather conditions are one of the main triggers of road accidents and driving an unreliable vehicle reduces safety even further. At the same time, the last thing you want is for your car to break down in the cold.

Around Christmas

Christmas is the time of year when malls are buzzing with customers, but showrooms become very quiet. Because most shoppers will direct their savings towards holidays and presents, dealers will be more likely to offer price cuts. Some salesmen offer Boxing Day discounts which they usually extend until the end of January.

Likewise, in recent years, the Black Friday sale has become increasingly popular in the car sales industry, providing a good opportunity for buyers to save money on new vehicles.
